In December 2011, the Bangladeshi government appointed Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd.) Abu Osman Chowdhury, a local leading member of the Bangladesh Awami League, as the administrator to the Chandpur district council. Md. Ismiel Hossain, the Deputy Commissioner of the Bangladeshi government's Cabinet Division, is responsible for Chittagong division's Chandpur district. The Chandpur City is 25 square km in area. It is a special class municipality & its subdivision Hajigonj is a 1st class municipality. The municipalities are proposed a city corporation. The City is 80 sq.km.
