Chandpur (Bengali: চাঁদপুর) is a city in east-central Bangladesh, located at the mouth of the Meghna River.
The Chandpur district is administered by the Chittagong Division, the second largest of Bangladesh's seven administrative divisions.[2]

History

The Chandpur city was established in 1878.

It is named from the name of Zamider Chand Roy, but some people think that it is named from Chand Sowdagor who came to this port to do business & some people think that it is named from Dorbesh Chand Fakir. In 1600, 1700 & 1800 the people of Eastern India have to go Kolkata & Dhaka by Chandpur Port. In those days Chandpur was called 'THE GATEWAY OF EASTERN INDIA'.

British

In a time the all massacre of Eastern India rebelled against the British about their salary. They came to Chandpur city rebelling. Then the police shot against them. Then many massacre was been Myrtar. Then Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji, Mowlana Muhammad Ali came to Chandpur City.

Administration

In December 2011, the Bangladeshi government appointed Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd.) Abu Osman Chowdhury, a local leading member of the Bangladesh Awami League, as the administrator to the Chandpur district council. Md. Ismiel Hossain, the Deputy Commissioner of the Bangladeshi government's Cabinet Division, is responsible for Chittagong division's Chandpur district. The Chandpur City is 25 square km in area. It is a special class municipality & its subdivision Hajigonj is a 1st class municipality. The municipalities are proposed a city corporation. The City is 80 sq.km. The population of the city 3,00,000 (.3 million). The financial side of this City is so important.The district has 5 parliamentary seat.This was called 'The Gateway Of Eastern Bengal.'
